You’ve got goals to hit — but staring at empty chairs isn’t getting you there.
If you’ve ever felt like your schedule isn’t working with you, it’s time to tap into one of the most overlooked opportunities in orthodontics: Power Days.
No, I’m not talking about working weekends or late Fridays. I’m talking about maximizing the school breaks, holidays, and summer months when families are ready to say YES to treatment — and you’ve got the perfect opening to start more patients, more efficiently.
What Are Power Days?
Power Days are select, high-opportunity days on your schedule designed for one thing: production and conversion. These are days when:
- Kids are out of school
- Parents are off work or flexible
You have the perfect window to start treatment (and generate real revenue)
Think: MLK Day, Presidents Day, Spring Break, random teacher workdays, and those summer weeks when your office c
Step 1: Identify Your Power Days
Gather school calendars for every district you serve and create a master list of:
- Federal holidays
- In-service/workdays
- Spring break windows
Summer start and end dates
🎯 Pro Tip: Prioritize non-major holidays where your practice stays open but schools are closed. These are prime-time Power Days.
Step 2: Build a Custom Power Day Schedule
Design a custom template in your PMS that makes room for what really matters. Now that you know which days are golden, it’s time to get intentional with how you use them.
Your Power Day schedule should be heavy on starts and production — and light on time-consuming, low-value appointments. This is not the day to schedule debands, retainer checks, or consults with no real urgency. Those can wait. Instead, pack your Power Day with:
- New Patient Exams – think adolescents ages 11-13
- Observation Ready and Between Phase Ready patients who are ready to convert.
- Add a chair for New Patient Coordinator Only exams – these are good for siblings and family members who already know the practice.
- Doing Virtual Exams? Get those folks in for Records and treatment plan confirmation!
- Keep a handful of regular adjustments or quick repairs in the afternoon, so your clinical team doesn’t get slammed.
✅ Avoid scheduling: debands, retainer checks, or other non-urgent, low-production appointments that eat up time without moving the needle.
Step 3: Train Your Team & Fill Those Slots
Once your Power Days are templated:
- Make sure your scheduling team knows which days are Power Days
- Offer incentives for same-day starts (more on that [here])
- Remind families of availability in advance via email and text blasts
Create urgency: “These fill fast!” is more than a phrase — it’s a strategy
Power Days = Less Stress, More Starts
You don’t need longer hours to hit your goals. You just need smarter scheduling.
Power Days help you:
- Increase production without extending your workweek
Start more patients at optimal times for families - Take control of your calendar instead of reacting to it
