If your team feels a little… all over the place — you’re not alone. Most orthodontists are so deep in the day-to-day that things like vision and values feel like luxuries or “nice-to-haves.” But I promise you: when your team knows what you stand for and where you’re going, everything gets easier — decisions, delegation, accountability, motivation. All of it.
So let’s break it down. This doesn’t have to be fluffy. It just has to be clear.
Step 1: Define Your Vision
Your vision is your future-state goal — the big-picture dream of what your practice is becoming. Think 3–5 years from now. Start by asking:
- Who am I as a doctor today… and who do I want to become?
- What does my practice look and feel like when it’s operating at its best?
- What do I want patients, team members, and even referring doctors to say about us?
Pro Tip: Write a one-sentence statement that captures your dream practice — in positive, aspirational language. (Example: “We are a modern, joyful practice known for creating beautiful smiles and a radically supportive team culture.”)
Step 2: Identify Your Core Values
Your values are how you show up every day. They are your practice’s character. Make a list of adjectives that describe your ideal team and culture. Think:
- Warm
- Precise
- Empowering
- Fun
- Ethical
- Driven
Then, narrow it down to your top 3–5 values — the ones that are non-negotiable. These should reflect how you hire, train, lead, and make decisions.
Need help? Try this: “In my practice, we always value ______ more than ______.”
Step 3: Share, Shape & Align with Your Team
Once your personal vision and values are clear, it’s time to invite the team into the process.
Gather your key players and:
- Share your vision with them (don’t skip this part!)
- Ask them what values they believe are most important to your practice
- Use this input to co-create a simple team mission statement — one that reflects what you’re building together
When the team has a hand in shaping your mission, they’re more likely to own it and live it. That’s when alignment becomes automatic — and accountability gets easier.
